Readers 

Readers let you read and write directly to a USB port.  They have no memory of their own. 

In the photo below the one up top is a high end reader it has slots for SD a microSD cards its roughly 4 years old and still going strong. 

The one on the bottom is a less expensive one it only handles microSD cards. The card is fully inserted in it and it the one used to recover images from my warped card.

 

These are handy and can be used as flash drives.  The PC will see them as a removable disc. Many newer PC's have built in slots for SD cards. 

 

 Here is how the adapters appear on my PC running windows Vista. Once inserted the cards act like disc drives.
