SD cards come in three sizes Standard, mini and micro. This describes the actual physical size of the card and not the storage capacity.

Please note the photos are not to scale or actual size.

There are also adapters available they are explained on their own page.

The sizes are as follows:

The inch fractional conversions are to the nearest 32nd of an inch and not exact.

There are a few "thin" cards out there. Unless the manufacturer of your device calls for them I would stay away as they do not meet the current standard and are mostly older cards.

Micro was originally called transflash or TF.

The opening on your device would be the Width by the thickness. Almost all devices spell this out near the opening.  Measuring this opening will not guarantee that it is actually SD card opening. There should be a logo near the opening on your device. See the "Installing a Card" page for details.

An additional way to identify these is by the pin count or number of tabs or connectors on the back.

  • A standard card will have 9 pins,
  •  A mini will have 11 pins
  • A micro will have 8 pins.
  •

The cards are also shaped differently and have different cutouts or notches as pictured below.

Lastly these should all have the SD logo on them. The standard card will just say SD, the mini and micro will have the size spelled out on them.
